Archive of a Landscape Without Data

Montevideo, Uruguay
2018

Archive of a Landscape Without Data is an installation carried out by MAPA as part of its work at Sacromonte Landscape Hotel. The exhibition presents a collection of samples collected by an explorer, catalogued, recorded and arranged to form an unpublished landscape archive.

Towards the inquiry “Spaces without data” proposed by the architecture studio, there are inputs from Argentinian guest Javier Agustín Rojas, architect and photographer, with his written work “Towards a landscape archive” and a reflection from landscape design office Bulla “From landscape to inscape”. These views conform a reflective corpus that seeks to find new sensitive ways of approaching the landscape from our current times.

Throughout a spring day, four people ambled through the landscapes of Sacromonte. Small branches, mosses, barks, stones, flowers were collected from the native mountains, productive and still untouched areas. Each element is chosen at random, guided by the time spent discovering and from searching what is usually overlooked.

Each landscape sample is transported, registered and encapsulated in an acrylic container to ensure natural conservation and to avoid interrupting its withering process.

Re-reading this amalgamation of elements allow us to reorder them and build a new version of the original landscape. The registry is exhibited in the industrial wing of an old warehouse. Organized in a single 18 meter line, the series is arranged and displayed in relation to the altimetric level in which they were obtained. A landscape topology.
